Self-Care Essentials While Grieving


Often after losing a beloved friend, we begin to grieve and neglect our personal self-care. It is important to remember that grief is a complex emotion. Loss is a highly personal experience and people grieve in different ways, all of which are normal.

Below are some helpful steps that one can take to look after themselves as the process their loss and go through the stages of grief.

Don’t let others tell you how to feel

Remember that your grief is your own to feel. You can cry or not cry, laugh, be angry and experience a myriad of emotions in your own way. Do not allow others' opinions to disturb you during this challenging time.  You will heal in your own time, whenever that may be.

Take some time out for you

Losing a companion is emotionally demanding. Take some time to ensure that you are looking after yourself. Make an effort to get ready and get out of the house each day. Go for a walk, get as much sleep as possible and eat a balanced and healthy diet.

Connect with those who understand

Only after a loss can any of us begin to understand the pain felt by a companion’s passing.  There may be friends in your circle that have also experienced loss. Connecting with those who are able to empathise with your experience may help you to get through this difficult time.


It is perfectly normal to reflect on memories of your beloved companion. Initially remembering the good times may be painful, however, make time to celebrate the positive memories.  Find greater appreciation for your furry friends'  life by recognising the amazing moments spent together.

If your self-care looks a little different from above, that is more than normal. Remember everyone is different. Try to spend some time for yourself, although your beloved pet is no longer by your side, they will be forever in your heart.
