How To Cope With The Loss Of A Pet During Covid-19
For most of us, life in the pandemic means we are separated from our friends and family.
However, the time spent safely at home means more time with our beloved companions. So, how do we cope when our four-legged friends pass away when they are what gives us a sense of safety and security during this time of global uncertainty? Here are 5 recommendations that you can use to cope with the loss of your pet during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Allow yourself to grieve
This time is uncertain and lonely for all, so allow yourself to feel. Although it may be challenging, communicating your feelings to someone or writing them down allows you to begin to heal. The grieving cycle cannot be hurried and there is no “normal”, so take each day as it comes and don’t ignore your emotional pain or bury your grief.
Connect with your loved ones
Losing your best friend is never an easy process let alone when we are physically isolated from our support network. Connecting with loved ones will allow you to get the love and support that you need during this time. Use platforms that use video-sharing as hearing their voice and seeing their face builds a stronger sense of connection.
Seek out nature
Whether it was your dog’s favourite walking route or your cat’s favourite spot to sun themselves, venture out into nature. Being outside will help to reduce stress and also ground you during this time.
Spend time with your other pets
It is important to know, that although your loved one is no longer by your side, they will be forever in your heart. While your other animals cannot replace the friend you have lost, like you, they are grieving the loss of a companion. Ensuring you are present and aren’t shutting your other family members out will help to make them feel comforted and establish a new routine in both your lives.
Seek professional help
There are so many support networks outside of immediate friends and family that listen and support you during your time of grief. At Patch & Purr, we understand the pain of losing your best friend, which is why we offer a free 45 minute, 1 on 1 Pet Loss counselling session for all our clients. Our counselling sessions are conducted by qualified grief and loss experts with years of experience helping people work through the loss of their beloved pets.
